Flora Moscovici

Working on a variety of media, Flora Moscovici approaches painting as a form of wandering, shaped by the observation and contemplation of her surroundings.

Tucked away in the heart of the city, the PTT (Post, Telegraph, and Telephone) building was completed in the late 1920s. With its mosaics, its façade is one of the few remaining examples of Art Deco architecture in Nantes.

Working on a variety of media, Flora Moscovici approaches painting as a form of wandering, shaped by the observation and contemplation of her surroundings.

In response to this space, she has created a painting outside the building’s ground level that dialogues with the hues and composition of the façade. Like a colourful carpet that unfurls down the slope, she lays out a pictorial landscape which blends into the geometry of the paving stones, as if reflecting the mosaic. Using lime-based paints and pigments, Moscovici creates multiple combinations to anchor her work in the space and cast forth vibrant colours and luminosity.

By having visitors walk on these ever-changing colours, she encourages them to discover the work from multiple perspectives. The painting will also evolve over time, fading from exposure to footsteps, the sun, the moon, or the rain. Influenced by Nantes-born filmmaker Jacques Demy, Moscovici her relationship to the city: somewhere between Lola for Nantes’ port, and Les Demoiselles de Rochefort for the city’s colourful transformation. As passersby walk through the painting outside this historical building, they become the actors of their own daydreams, reshaping the city to create a new, imaginary world.
