Céleste Boursier Mougenot : fluides
Céleste Boursier Mougenot

As a trained musician interested in contemporary art since the early 1990s, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot began transposing his compositions into spaces reserved for visual arts, drawing on the talents of living things (trees, birds, fish, bees) as well as natural materials and phenomena (rocks, air, water, wind, cosmic waves) and classical and traditional musical instruments to produce moving sonic forms that he describes as living.

As a trained musician interested in contemporary art since the early 1990s, he began transposing his compositions into spaces reserved for visual arts, which were under the sway of Fluxus, Land Art and minimalism at the time, while he continued to be inspired by the DIY attitude fuelling the New York music scene, from punk to experimental music. In an attempt to extract the musical potential out of situations and objects, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot continues to use classical and traditional musical instruments (guitar, piano, drums) – which he activates in very original ways – as well as everyday objects, appliances, or machines (coat hangers, vacuum cleaners, fans, phones, etc.). He also draws on the talents of living things (trees, birds, fish, bees) as well as natural materials and phenomena (rocks, air, water, wind, cosmic waves) to produce moving sonic forms that he describes as living.

Each of Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s works is created in situ, in a relationship with the spatial or environmental variables of the given venue housing his artwork. Each produces a sensorial experience – a tactile, visual and auditory experience – that modifies our perception of places and situations. The exhibition thus becomes a context conducive to the visitor’s gaze and hearing, plunging him/her in a state of hypnotic fascination.

Several years after creating from here to ear v.8 (an immense aviary where zebra finches perching on open-tuned electric guitars produce power chords live) for the 2009 Estuaire Nantes <> Saint-Nazaire, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot returns to Nantes for a solo exhibition at the HAB Galerie.
Adapting this work – which has become one of his most famous – for the roomy concrete architecture of this former shipping hangar, Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has devised an all-encompassing landscape composed of well-known works and other, newer pieces. Continuing his research – by bringing together wavelengths, vegetation and birds – the artist has created a brand new, immersive exhibition that fills the open space of the HAB Galerie.
