{"id":121727,"date":"2025-04-29T11:26:14","date_gmt":"2025-04-29T09:26:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.levoyageanantes.fr\/oeuvres\/antipodos\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T17:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T16:34:06","slug":"antipodos","status":"publish","type":"oeuvre","link":"https:\/\/www.levoyageanantes.fr\/en\/artworks\/antipodos\/","title":{"rendered":"Antipodos"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"VAN22_CHAPEAU\"><p>Two anonymous figures appear to be storming the facade of a building and the Louis XVI column, defying all gravitational logic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>As part of the pedestrianization of Rue Mar\u00e9chal-Joffre, Iv\u00e1n Argote presents a reinterpretation of his work <em>Antipodos<\/em>, which is inspired by archaic notions of people from the ends of the Earth who were often depicted as semi-monstrous beings. In times when the Earth was believed to be flat, the Greek term \u201cantipode\u201d referred to an \u201copposite land.\u201d In the Middle Ages, it evolved to mean \u201cwith backwards feet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Nantes, at each end of the pedestrian zone, two anonymous figures appear to be storming the facade of a building and the Louis XVI column, defying all gravitational logic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This defiance is enhanced by the disappearance of a Louis XVI sculpture using mirrors to create an optical illusion that reflects the sky. Through this gesture, the Colombian artist invites us to reconsider the presence of monarchical symbols in public space. He also reconnects us with the history of this column, which had no statue between 1790 and 1823 due to political instability. By associating the monument with an anonymous and disconcerting effigy, he echoes the offbeat spirit of Rue Mar\u00e9chal-Joffre. This mirrored confrontation ultimately reminds us that history is never static and that our perspective can always be turned upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<\/div><\/section>\n\t<section class=\"VAN22_NOTE VAN22_BG_gris\"><div class=\"VAN22_LIMIT_SECTION\"><p>Iv\u00e1n Argote was born in Bogot\u00e1 (Colombia) in 1983.
