For her exhibition Ce que la terre retient at Passage Sainte-Croix, Le M\u00e9haut\u00e9 brings together a number of brand-new works connected to Nantes \u2014 created from various peatlands, market garden and forest soils \u2014 alongside earlier works resulting from research and past experiments with soils.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n

Poetic, philosophical, scientific, and political, Le M\u00e9haut\u00e9\u2019s work explores the interactions between humans and their environment.
Many of her pieces are titled N\u00e9gociations<\/em>, evoking both humanity\u2019s ongoing dialogue with nature and the sculptor\u2019s own engagement with materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peat, coconut fiber, stone, cork, clay, beeswax, and mycelium form the substance of her work. Through research residencies and investigations close to home, she examines soils \u2013 their composition, history, and future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this exhibition, she brings together a series of new works linked to Nantes, created from peatland, market-garden, and forest soils, alongside earlier pieces stemming from research and experimentation focused on the earth beneath our feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While celebrating the richness of soils, the exhibition also addresses the threats they face. One example is N\u00e9gociation 95 <\/em>\u2013 D\u00e9coloniser les imaginaires <\/em>(\u201cDecolonizing Imaginaries \u2013 2018), made from materials found at an illegal dumping site in Normandy:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAmong various discarded materials: motor oil pooled at the foot of a mound. The resulting form evokes a bathtub, a feeding trough, a watering basin, and a sarcophagus all at once. The soil containing the oil has cracks. Ready to give way, it is thirsty. This sculpture reflects the depletion of land and the scarcity of water.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
