The exhibition UFA – Université des futurs africains has invited African artists who take a critical approach with respect to the notion of the future and ask themselves what knowledge and stories do we need to imagine the worlds of tomorrow.
What role has the African continent played in depictions of the future? And what images of Africa have been mobilized?
Using meticulous research, these artists go back in time and revisit futuristic experiments related to the Africa continent, then conjure up mythological origins in order to invent alternatives. These heirs to pan-Africanism and digital technology raise very contemporary questions related to ecology, healthcare and struggles for independence, then dream up alternative present-tenses that reimagine the converging point where science, information and spirituality overlap.
