As part of this season’s France-Romania partnership at the Institut Français, Nantes’ fine arts museum has invited internationally renowned artist Mircea Cantor for a solo show. This exhibition is part of a story that began in 1999 when Mircea Cantor – at the time, a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cluj, Romania – was invited to join the post-graduate program at the Beaux-Arts de Nantes, where he stayed on to live for several years.
The exhibition takes Cantor’s early artistic trajectories and puts them into perspective with what he subsequently affirmed to be at the heart of his work: questioning the notions of identity, ethics, politics, contemporary reality and its contradictions, all at the same time. Traces and memories are thus juxtaposed to illustrate the Romanian word înainte – an ambiguous word which, depending on the context, can either mean "forward" or "as before".
