la nuit du Van
15 june

La Nuit du VAN, is a way of celebrating the opening of this new urban circuit together. Follow the rhythm of the many different inaugurations happening this one night. Every location will remain open till midnight. Get a feel for the city by taking the time to appreciate the events on offer everywhere: acoustic and improvised concerts, adrenalized matches of table football, festive barbecues on the banks of the Loire, watch the sunset from the top of one of the new vistas we’ve installed (the Tour Bretagne, the roof of the architecture school, platforms)… With every detour, let yourself be whisked away in a city turned upside down by art!

le lieu unique

au milieu du monde

As a homage to Jules Vernes’ pterodactyls, to the Les Allumées festival right here in Nantes, the Mondial Club d’Yverdon-les-Bains, to all the programmers of all the festivals here and elsewhere, le lieu unique opens its doors to its partners in France and abroad, mixing local scenes and travelling artists. According to a Swiss legend, the middle of the world is located in a canton de Vaud at an improbable spot where the rivers Rhine and Rhône meet. Positioned exactly in the middle of land masses, according to certain geographers, Nantes can now demand to be recognized as the true center, both literally and figuratively. And, it is high time it claimed this title through a series of unique and nocturnal festivities.

Le lieu unique, its feet firmly planted on the central pole of the Western hemisphere, invites you on a motionless journey throughout ten weeks of festivities and offers everyone (from tourists and les Nantais, to lost wanderers and passers-by) a concentration of people, here and now.

On the agenda, artists, musicians, and performers, all with different styles, whom have already been invited by the best European festivals: L’expérience japonaise (Marseilles/Paris), MIDI Festival (Hyères), DEAF (Rotterdam), Belluard Festival (Fribourg), Brighton International Festival, etc.

THURSDAY, FRIDAY AND SATURDAY 19.00 TO 04.00

des ducs de bretagne

rue de la chute
royal de luXe
FROM 15 JUNE TO 1 JULY

Jean-Luc Courcoult founded the street theatre company Royal de Luxe in 1979, and has been based in Nantes since 1989. The life of this company puts on small and large-scale performances which all share a common universal language and a desire to perform on city streets throughout the world – and sometimes in the most extreme landscapes of Asia, Africa, or America. Royal de Luxe has developed different forms of theatre, their signature form being “les spectacles de Géants”. These urban fairy tales tell stories on the scale of an entire city showing Giants pushed around by dozens of midgets. Today, they dart around the planet to tell creation myths and attract millions of spectators.

With their new show, based on a Western, the courtyard castle will become the backdrop for the conquest of the West… “Behind the West, there is the West, and still more West. Except, it’s a direction on an unstable earth that speaks of paradise as if it were hell day and night. Humans feed on legends, and most often ones they’ll never themselves experience. But believing in them is what makes the heart beat to the rhythm of an Absolute they’ll never encounter except after burying their carcass six feet underground. And even in that case, no one has ever come back to talk about it. Or, maybe they have?!”
Jean-Luc Courcoult (author, director)

TUESDAY 3 JULY

Pioneer of American minimalist music, Steve Reich has never stopped searching for new terrains of experimentation and has turned to the study of certain types of ethnic music for their pulsation and mobile cycles. Far from the mainstream, he remains a reference for groups like Sonic Youth, Michael Nyman, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Fennesz or electronic musicians. For this rare concert, Steve Reich will play his groundbreaking work, Clapping Music and cross paths with Bang On A Can All-Stars, who will be playing a decidedly electric set of instruments for the event.

Clapping Music (1972), for clapping hands and applause. Cello Counterpoint (2003), for octet of cellos or a single cello and multi-channel tape machine. Piano Phase/Video Phase (1967/2002), for two pianos (or tape machine and one piano). Nagoya Guitars (1994), for two guitars. New York Counterpoint (1985), for clarinet and tape machine. 2×5 (2008), for rock music ensemble.
